The program won’t be paid for by taxpayer dollars, but with money from business ventures, according to Head. The program will give out 300 $1,0000 scholarships to qualifying students. The LSC Foundation has pledged to give $300,000 to the program next year for the next batch of students in the program. The students in the program can continue in the next semester if they continue to meet the program requirements. There will also be minimum GPA requirements, they have to complete 15 community service hours and be full-time students. Many students at the lowest level have their tuition and fees completely paid for through Pell grants and other non-loan sources. Head said it won’t help the lowest part because this program targets students that still owe the college after scholarships and grants have been applied. “We expect students to pay for part of their college. “We think we’re going to help not the lowest income, but the ones above that,” Head said. Steve Head announced at Thursday’s Board of Trustees meeting that the system will start with a $300,000 program that supplements students, but doesn’t pay off their schooling.
